Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you are training for a race, using a stationary bike for daily fitness, or just want to know your mileage for weekend rides or commuting, the Planet Bike Protege 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer is the perfect, easy-to-operate computer for multiple uses. A must have for any gadget enthusiast or anyone who is data driven, the Protege 9.0 allows you to track your progress and improvement as you build strength through multiple functions as well as view the temperature and time on one easy-to-read screen. Small enough to fit nicely on your handle bars, but large enough to read clearly, the Protege 9.0 provides all the information you need in a sleek and elegant form.

The Protege 9.0 has a "buttonless" design that allows for a large Macromonitor LCD screen with most of the information displayed on one very readable page. Displaying four lines of information on one screen, the computer provides up to five pieces of data at once without you even needing to press a button. Switching displays only requires a simple tap on the computer, making it is easy to operate in the midst of your ride, even with gloves on. A longer tap on the computer will reset the data. The functions include current speed, speed comparator, ride time, trip distance, dual odometer (for two wheel sizes), average speed, maximum speed, clock, and temperature for up to two different bikes.

The Protege 9.0 makes it easy for you to record and track your trip information effortlessly as you ride. The computer auto-starts when your bike begins moving, and mileage and time stop recording when you stop and restart automatically when you begin again so you can get an accurate reading of your time and distance no matter how many times you stop.

The Protege 9.0 has a two bike capability, allowing you to set the wheel circumference for two different wheel sizes so you can preset odometer readings for both. A single button on the back of the computer allows you to toggle between bikes. An additional wire/sensor harness is all that is needed to use the computer on two different bikes. The computer itself is removable from the holder it sits in and easily switches between bikes.

Built to last, the Protege 9.0 is backed by a lifetime warranty. It comes complete with a heavy-duty oversized wire harness with an 82-centimeter wire mounting kit for the front wheel and a case. The device is ultrasonically welded to be completely weatherproof. Installation is simple with easy-to-follow directions. About Planet Bike
In November 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, WI. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.

Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.

Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high-quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, the company strives to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short 10-year history, it has made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the four-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that 10 years ago started as a one-man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve its product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

Excellent Computer at a Bargain Price 5 by .. Catman (Oregon, USA)
There's a lot to like about this cycle computer. The "buttonless" design works well and allows a large display with most everything you'll need on one very readable page. I was especially pleased to find that, unlike my old CatEye, you can preset an odometer reading. I was also pleased to find that it has a 2 bike capability. You set wheel circumfrence and can preset an odometer readings for each. A single button on the back toggles between bikes. All that's needed is another wire/sensor harness which is relatively cheap. Modes are selected by pressing up on the entire computer and will show an odometer reading for the selected bike or an accumulated reading for both. The clock feature is also welcome.

The only negative is the temperature reading, which proved to be wildly inaccurate. I think sunshine causes a greeen-house effect inside the sealed unit. Whatever, it reads much higher than actual air temperature although tucked away in the garage the reading is reasonably accurate. Temperature reading wasn't a big issue with me anyway.

I couldn't be happier with it!

Great budget bike computer 5 by .. John O'Bryan (Westwood Hills, KS)
Like others have reported, the thermometer only reads correctly in the shade. The only other problem is that when I ride in the rain, which I try to avoid, it turns off. That said, it comes back and works great when dried off. Everything else is awesome. It has a really nice big display, so you can easily read everything and get a lot of data at once. The whole unit acts as the button to toggle between screens, so that is easy to do as well. This thing has taken a lot of abuse and kept going. Combine the great display, ease of use, super price and thermometer that does work well in shade and the Planet Bike Protege 9.0 is a real deal.

All I want and need at a gr8 price 5 by .. C. Meyer (Southern Minnesota)
What's not to like? Bike data, time, temp, low cost, this unit has performed very well. So well I bought another one for my mountain bike. My road bike has had one for 2 years and over 4,000 miles. This spring the display started to fade in and out... still functional, but almost a slow dim/regular warning. So I bought a common CR2032 battery, changed it, reset the data (make sure you copy your mileage if you want to re-enter it into the newly erased unit. The battery change wipes it out) and all was well.

Regarding the temperature reading, it's fairly accurate when NOT in direct sunlight, but goes bonkers when in the sunlight. This is more comical than anything... you've GOT to understand how a thermometre works and take into account the environment this unit operates in. Plus it's not exactly an expensive unit... the temperature is a bonus, not the primary feature! (DOH!)

I'm glad it's there, but I'm not really counting on it for critical readings. Am much happier with the units features, the clock, etc. Switching displays requires a simple tap... not a long push (will reset data from the current ride.)

All I want at a can't beat price!

Johnny D from NY City 5 by .. JOHNNY D (L.E.S., NYCity10002)
I have had this computer for two weeks now and am extremely satisfied with it. I have not had any problems with the thermometer and find it to be both accurate and rugged. I have been really using it every day and find no bad things to say. I must admit that I have not rode in the rain or any inclement weather. Definitely, well worth it!

Best Design I've used 5 by .. L. S. Larsen (Holmdel, NJ United States)
I've owned several including cateye, vetta, sigma and I have to say this is the best design I've seen. I've paid over $100 for one, and for the price ($22)it is even more outstanding. Simple to use, well made with a sturdy cable. Rode in the rain yesterday - no problem!

It was unclear from some of the reviews how it works. Most of the display except the bottom line reads all the time. It slides forward in the bracket (spring loaded) to toggle thru the 4 versions of the bottom display. If you hold it forward for a few seconds it resets. That's it. No buttons. As noted in some reviews you need to be careful not to reset it accidently if you hold it too long
